The Don’t Freak Out Guide to Parenting Kids with Asperger’s is just that; a true guide!  Each chapter is filled with stories of experiences and examples, some humorous, others a bit more serious; but throughout each there is understanding, sincerity and support for those parents that have a child with Asperger’s or high functioning autism.   Each chapter ends with a very helpful summary of key ideas and a “Don’t Freak Out exercise”.    Sharon says, “If you’ve met one person with Asperger’s then you’ve met one person with Asperger’s.”  Despite how different each of our autism spectrum kids are, this book is completely relate-able and comforting as well as very helpful and enjoyable read!  Sharon is reassuring that we are not alone!

The Don’t Freak Out Guide is easy to read and follow. The personal stories are a great addition as are the writing of autistic adults. The book is set up in a way that you can reference back to a section if needed. Sharon’s personal experiences and Neil’s professional look made for a great team and an overall great book.

This is the book I needed when I first received the boys diagnoses, when I was quite frankly, “freaking out” and blindly navigating my way through the darkness. It’s like chatting with a girlfriend who gets it -who has lived it and can teach the basic things you need to understand for the journey of raising a child with Asperger’s. The approach is practical, and the exercises help you apply what you are learning to your own situation with your family. Bravo!

I loved this simple, straightforward guide to parenting kids with AS. The information, techniques and resources are easy to understand and usable from the very first page. What’s more, it’s fun to read. Thumbs up!
